This month KILANFEST held its 2nd gaming event, although Mother
Nature was not so kind during that weekend of March 8th-9th.
Brian
Miller who hosted the event said that due to the inclement weather,
there were a few no-shows, however attendance was actually up from
the previous event. Also, due to the generous donations by
sponsors, there were prizes for all the attendees. Brian
extends thanks to the sponsors who made this a wonderful event, and
asks everyone to show appreciation by supporting them (check out
this
link). Remember to mark your calendar for June 28th -
29th for KILANFEST 3.0.

A Look
Back at March 4th, 2008
- General Meeting Review |

Chad Hanthorn from
Smart Computing was our presenter for the March General Meeting.
Besides giving each attendee a "goodie bag" filled with the current issue of
Smart Computing and a mouse pad, Chad discussed the benefits of Smart
Computing, highlighting a favorite one: Free Tech Support
to paid subscribers. From being able to talk to a "live" support
person in Lincoln, Nebraska, to being on hold for no longer than 10 minutes
(after which you are automatically kicked over to customer support), a
subscriber is allowed unlimited calls for only $29 per year. In
addition, the website contains a section titled "Tech Support
Center" where a subscriber can find information on the following:
 |
Error messages |
|
Solutions Knowledge Base |
|
Basic troubleshooting |
|
Security & Privacy Section |
|
Backup & Recovery |
|
Preventable & Regular Maintenance |
|
Networking Communications |
|
Driver Education |
|
Tips on Using Browsers |
During
the presentation, Chad displayed a list (shown at
right)
stating Smart Computing's
Top 10 Benefits for Paid Subscribers. As he explained
to the group, one of the "coolest features" was that a
subscriber is able to browse all the issues and articles of all
5 magazines online: PC Today, First Glimpse, Reference Series,
Computer Power User, and of course, Smart Computing.
One of the biggest selling points is that the magazine is written in
plain English, so you do not have to be an IT tech to
understand how to improve your computer or run the newest
software (as there is a Software Review in every monthly
issue). Actually, there are numerous other benefits to
be had within the magazine and on the website...something for
everyone who has an avid interest in computing. It was
a pleasure having Chad with us, and we hope he comes back
again.
AND
THE WINNERS ARE:

What a way to celebrate a birthday!
Winnie
Miller, the birthday Gal of the night won the first drawing
prize. Wayne Perkey won the raffle prize which was the
cross-cut shredder.
Unfortunately,
John Ashe was not present at the March
meeting when his name came up for the member drawing. Just a reminder that, in order to win the
drawing, you must be an active member and you need to be present
at the meeting . The Drawing Program shown on the left randomly determines
the winner based upon a list of all currently paid-up
memberships. So... keep your membership current, and join
us in April. The drawing will now be
$30. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Article 1:
Free VideoSpin Software for you PC
|
By Ira Wilsker,
iwilsker@apcug.net Obtained from author with the author's permission for publication by APCUG member groups.
Many of us routinely perform the tasks of taking digital videos, and
then editing them, converting them to a multitude of formats, and
uploading them to one or more video hosting websites. While Windows XP
users can download and install the free Windows Movie Maker 2.1 from
Microsoft (it may already be installed on many machines with Service
Pack 2 installed), and Windows Vista users have the Vista version of
Movie Maker built in, there are also other superior, free
video utilities available... more

Article 2:
Benefits of Using a Computer Sandbox |
By Gene Barlow
User Group Relations
Copyrighted January 2008
Obtained from author with the author's permission for publication by
APCUG member groups.
A computer Sandbox is newer technology that is not very well known,
but, it can be quite useful in many situations. By using a Sandbox
utility, you can place your computer in a protected state where you
can try some rather risky things on your computer and not have your
computer damaged in the trials. Once you place your computer into
Sandbox mode, you can safely run anything on your computer, knowing
that all changes to your hard drive will not be permanently made to
your computer. While in Sandbox mode, your computer runs as if all
changes to the hard drive were actually made to your system. But, at
the end of using the Sandbox, you can throw away these changes,
putting your computer back exactly the way it was before entering
the Sandbox... more
