Highlights of upcoming SIG meetings :
NEW Security SIG:
2/04/2008 - Get your computer cleaned up and guarded! Discussion
on relative merits of various malware and virus programs
available to us. First meeting was in December, 2007. See
current article on Bot-Nets below.
Access Basic SIG - 2/09/2008 - Creating
Reports and Mailing Labels
Reports are the way to convert data to information. For example
the data could be a list of names of the people running the
Derby Half-Marathon and the time they finished. It is probably
sorted by the number on the tag that they wore. If you want to
find out how you or your friend did, a printout of that list
doesn’t help much unless you have the tag number.
With a query and a report this raw data can be converted to a
list sorted by last name with the calculated time elapsed for
the race and what place the person got. Now it is useful
information.
Learn to create a report and also create and print mailing
labels from a membership database.
[note from editor: Last month's meeting
was actually on creating a database and not creating reports and
mailing labels as was listed in the January newsletter]

[Editor's Note: If interested, there is a new "Security" SIG, which meets the
first Monday of the month at 6:30pm]
Keeping your computer safe while connected to the Internet is
becoming more and more difficult. The "attackers" are becoming
more sophisticated and are sharing more ways to get their
software into your computer. Business Week recently ran an
article on the major security problems expected in 2008.
Unfortunately, most of them arrived long before the new year
started. We have been warned for years that it was possible to
recruit unprotected computers into networks that could be
controlled by an external source. This recruitment network
problem has gotten much worse over the past few years. It is
estimated that 7% of the computers connected to the Internet
have been infected with a Botnet program. So what is a "Botnet"?

New Gadgets for 2008 |

Every year my husband and I attend the Consumer Electronic
(CES)
in Las Vegas to see the latest and greatest high tech gadgets.
This year didn't disappoint. We found everything from a Leggett
& Platt's $20,000 Starry Night bed with an HDTV projector,
pop-up speakers, snoring sensors, iPod dock, automatic lighting
system, and breathing pattern monitor to a General Motors Chevy
Tahoe prototype car that drove itself. While I don't expect this
GM prototype to make it to market anytime soon, some of the
technology that it is built in will evolve and is sure to find
its way into our future automobiles... more
