KILANFest v1.0 Wrap Up
by Brian Miller

Hostaroo would like to thank KIPCUG for their sponsorship and support of KILANFest v1.0. We held our first ever LAN Party on October 20th and 21st and it was a great success. We had 30 gamers playing for 30 straight hours. There was approximately $2,000 worth of door prizes given out to the gamers. High volumes of caffeinated drinks were consumed. Everyone had a great time and we have had a lot of interest in the event. That is one reason why we are planning to do it again. We hope you will register and join us for the gaming fun on March 8th and 9th of 2008 at KILANFest v2.0. You can find more information as we get closer to the date on our website at http://www.kilanfest.com. We want to give a special thanks to the KIPCUG members who volunteered to work the snack counter during the KILANFest event.

KIPCUG Networking and Change in General Meeting Time

Beginning in December, the meeting time will be changed to 7:00 pm, with a 6:30 pm start time for networking.  In an effort to encourage the networking portion of the night, there will be SIG tables set up, along with an informal user-to-user forum table, located at the far end by the refreshment stand.  We encourage you to come at 6:30 pm, find your seat, get up and mingle with fellow members and guests, while enjoying some refreshments supplied by the church.  Proceeds from the refreshment sales will be used by the church for the computer area.  Please note that the general meeting time has been moved ahead by 30 minutes to ease the travel congestion encountered by many of our members, but KIPCUG will continue to end the meeting on time.

   November 6, 2007 - General Meeting Review

  “The Network is the Computer”

Jeff Harvey, Business Consultant from CBTS, was on hand at our November meeting to present the virtual desktop infrastructure developed by Sun. Jeff referred to this new networking solution as a return to the days of a data center, where all applications and data would be stored on a central server, enhanced by the internet and the newest technology.  Some of the major points covered by this new system (3 systems with a price range from $200 to $800 with a 17" display) included:

  • Security
    • No local data
    • No viruses
    • Smart Card enabled; leaves no information on the desktop
  • Manageability
    • Plug-n-Play
    • Centrally deployed applications
    • No local install, updates or patches
    • No local OS management
    • No local memory upgrades required
  • Reliability
    • Mean time before failure estimated at 200k hours or 22 years
    • Solid state with no moving parts
    • Applications and data centrally managed and backed up
    • No local memory crashes
    • "Green" machine
  • Value
    • Up to 70% ROI on desktop solutions
    • Focus IT dollars on new services, not maintenance
    • 3 systems, priced from $200 to $800

Jeff provided us with a customer example of a medical facility in which the doctors go from exam room to exam room, insert their smart cards (which has 2 forms of password encryption) into the terminal, and access the patients records including history.  The doctor can treat the patient, update records, and then afterwards, remove their smart card and go onto the next exam room and next patient, without ever having to log off and on.  There is no information left on the display, nor any means to gain access to the application or data.  Sun's virtual desktop reduces the maintenance, upgrading and operational costs associated with most PC environments.

Your computer hard drive is very important: Your hard drive is the heart of your computer system. It contains your Windows operating system, which is the master control program of your computer. It also contains all of your application programs that help you do productive things with your computer. But, most importantly, it contains all the data files that you create using your application programs. These data files are the most valuable part of your computer and the hardest to replace if something should happen to your hard drive.... more

Last month I highlighted four of the most common backup approaches used today and compared them to show you why the Perfect Backup Approach is the best way to do backups. You can read that article titled, Backup Approaches Compared on my web site at www.ugr.com/nl0507b.html . As soon as I sent this article out, I got messages from users asking why I had not included other backup approaches in my article. So, this month, I will add two additional backup approaches and try to explain where they fit in the comparison....more

Using Imaging Software For Backup

There are many hard drive backup programs on the market that tell you that they can make an "image" of your hard drive. This allows you to restore your programs and data in case of a hard drive crash. They also will transfer everything on your hard drive to a new drive. Among these backup programs are well-known names such as Symantec Ghost, Acronis True Image, R-Drive Image, Image for Windows, Paragon Drive Backup and a host of free imaging applications. In terms of making a complete backup of your hard drive (operating system, applications and data), they are very successful. However, what happens when your hard drive crashes or you decide you want a new computer? Will these applications solve the problem of restoring your applications and data quickly and easily? Let's look at the generic methods they use for these situations....more

Vista Backup and Shadow Copy

Windows Vista helps easily back up computer settings, files, and applications. The new Windows Backup feature provides more choices for storing backed information. You can choose to back up to CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, external hard disk, another internal hard disk, or to another computer or server connected to your network. Automated scheduling allows for backup when and where you choose. Just use a wizard to schedule when and where you want to backup. If a disaster strikes and you need to recover a wizard helps select the files or folders to restore and prompts you for restore media. Then it restores the selected files.... more
