Corel Corporation Special Users Group
Pricing!
Remember the great discount given by Corel Corporation
to us during

an email from
Evelyn Watts, who was our September Presenter. In it,
she exuberantly told us that KIPCUG members could get a
terrific discount on all full and upgrade software, a 40%
discount with no expiration date! However, we were
informed that Corel Corporation would be monitoring the use
of the discount to ensure it was not being misused by
non-members. So, you can log into the

A Look Back at October 2, 2007
- General Meeting Review |
Photographic History of Louisville:
How to Preserve Your Photos
Bill Carner, of the University of Louisville
Photographic Archives Department, presented us with a very
enlightening slideshow and commentary during our October 2nd
meeting, including many "then and now" photographs not used in
the book,
Louisville Then and Now. Bill and his department
played a major role in the photographic content of the book,
which is currently available in book stores. Bill also
covered the scanning procedures
used by the Archival Department. They scan and classify not only
photographs but documents as well, which are available to look
and get copies of, by the general public. One of the
scanning methods in use is a digital scanning camera secured to
a movable stand, which is able to scan very large documents or
photographs.
Information about the University of Louisville Photographic
Archival Department and its consumer services can be found at
http://library.louisville.edu/ekstrom/special/ pa_index.html
. As stated on that page, under Services, "The
Photographic Archives has a fully staffed reference desk
offering service during all operating hours. The Photographic
Archives Print Service is capable of producing prints and slides
of items from our collections as needed by researchers. A full
service darkroom can produce prints, slides and photocopies for
research or publication." A price list is also
available on the site.
The October meeting also included our "Back to Basics" segment,
featuring Webmaster, Brian Miller, who covered the topic
of Disk Management.
Announcements made during the meeting included the following:
-
Brian Miller requested help from
KIPCUG members to assist in managing the concessions room at
the KILANfest, which is scheduled for this weekend.
Come out for a couple of hours, and also take the time to
see what a gaming festival is like. Please contact
Brian at 502-817-2834 if you can donate a couple of hours to
this event.
-
The Digital Photography SIG announced that
they would be discussing Video Editing at this month's
meeting, Tuesday, October 23, 2007. Members and
non-members are invited to attend. Meetings are held at the Bonair Branch of the Louisville Library. More details
can be found by visiting the SIG page (see SIG segment below
for link).
-
Tom Scanlan reported that there is a new
virus out there that works by spoofing the DNS server.
If you click on a favorite and the page doesn't look right
or a "pop-up" appears, do not click open, or "close"
or the "x" or use the "back arrow".

-
President Bill Buzan put out a request
to all of us, who like to forward jokes or stories to
friends, to forward the next e-newsletter with an
invitation to join us at our next meeting. "Guests
are always welcome here!"
Publicity Director, Robbie Gibson, handled the
User-to-User segment, fielding such questions as whether to use
Insightbb for its virus protection, and what to do to
increase the speed of a laptop. Answers to these questions
and more can be found on KIPCUG's
forum page.
Questions from this segment are posted to the forum along with
the answers if available. Hopefully, you will find an
answer to a question or problem you are having, or possibly you
will be able to help another user with the knowledge or
experience you possess. Please visit our forum, and help
it to grow!

November 6th
Meeting
Presenter: Sun Microsystems - Jeff Harvey,
Business Consultant from CBTS
Topic:: “The Network is the Computer”
Sun
has developed a virtual desktop infrastructure that will
change the way many networks operate. All the applications
and data will be stored on a central server. The user can
log in from anywhere and their PC, Laptop, or mobile device
will instantly perform as if the central server was their
hard drive. The server will be more secure. Since all data
and applications are not on the local hard drive, any
compromise of a local device does not compromise the data.
The local device runs quicker, lasts longer, and will be
less expensive to purchase. Whether you run many
applications with a large amount of data, or are an average
user running many devices, Sun’s virtual desktop reduces
the maintenance, upgrading and operational costs associated
with most PC environments.
PLEASE NOTE: Time change for
November Meeting - Due to the Elections, the
doors for the monthly meeting will open at 7:00 pm instead of the normal
time of 6:30 pm. Please make a note on your calendars of
this time change, which affects only the November meeting. |
December Meeting

greatest gadgets to put on your Christmas wish list, or to
get for that special someone. |

KIPCUG General Meeting |
Highlights of upcoming SIG meetings :
Digital Photography SIG: 10/23/07 -
"Introduction to Editing Digital Video Recordings" -
Bill Edwards
We will be demonstrating how to import a digital video from a
camcorder into video editing software, how to edit it, and how to
save it on DVD. If we get enough interest, we may be able to
form a "Video SIG".
Access Basics SIG: 11/10/2007 - "Normalization" -
Alan Birch
This does not require removal of hair dye, piercings or wild
clothing. Normalization is how you decide what data goes in
which table in Access. If done right, this significantly reduces
entering duplicate information. It can also reduce the chance of
entering the wrong information, and make it easier to put data
in.
It is common sense more than anything else, but it does require a little
thought. Doing this before you start building your tables can
save a lot of pain later. It is sort of like figuring out a
route on a map. If you know where you’re going, you’ll get
there.
SIG Leaders -
Post highlights of your upcoming meetings or
highlights of past meetings here. Please contact the
editor.

Article 1
Beat the Heat |
By Judy Lococo, a KIPCUG Director at Large, and past
APCUG President. Obtained from author with the author's permission for publication by APCUG member groups.
The KISS [ Keep It Simple Stupid ] Principle is one I
wholeheartedly agree with. And do I have a deal for you! While
I was at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last
January, I discovered a small booth nestled among some of the giants
that didn’t have bimbos, or comedians, or the hard-sell barkers
accosting people as they wandered by. But what they offered
was well worth the price of admission. With more laptops
everywhere now, with mobile users proliferating exponentially, with
all the wireless hot spots following this same pattern, this is one
deal you could hardly disagree with.....

Online Weather Resources May Be Lifesavers |
By Ira Wilsker,
iwilsker@apcug.net Obtained from APCUG with the author's
permission for publication by APCUG member groups.
We
just learned a valuable lesson from the hit we took recently from
Hurricane Humberto. At 8am on a Wednesday, a local TV weatherman
was saying that the clouds in the Gulf would not amount to
anything. At 10am, the National Hurricane Center (www.nhc.noaa.gov)
announced that it was Tropical Depression 9, and we were put under a
tropical storm warning. At 1pm, the National Hurricane Center
announced that it was Tropical Storm Humberto. When it came ashore
here in the wee hours of Thursday morning, it was a hurricane.
According to Senior Hurricane Specialist James Franklin, of the
National Hurricane Center, "To put this
development in perspective — no tropical cyclone in the historical
record has ever reached this intensity at a faster rate near
landfall. It would be nice to know, someday, why this happened."....

An important message...Windows XP Update
Prevents XP Repair
Contributed
by Sue Foulks with special thanks to Linda Gonse,
editor/webmaster for the Orange County IBM PC Users' Group
(www.orcopug.org)
|
Linda Gonse, editor and webmaster for the Orange County IBM
PC Users' Group sent me an email at the end of September
with a link,
https://windowssecrets.com/2007/
09/27/03-Stealth-Windows-update-prevents-XP-repair ,
advising me of a problem with an update Microsoft deployed
in July and August that prevents the "repair" feature of
Windows XP from functioning properly. The author of
this article, Scott Dunn (“Stealth Windows update prevents
XP repair,” September 27, 2007, Windows Secrets), explains
the nature of this problem, and goes on to say further down
in the article that most "ordinary" Windows users may never
encounter this problem. However, administrators will be
affected if they have to run the "repair" feature, because
they will not be able to install the latest 80 patches from
Microsoft. The article explains how to manually
register the patches yourself, or to fix the problem by
installing an older version of Windows Update Files.
If you've used the "repair" feature in the past, or think
you may in the future, or know of someone who is the
administer of a network, this is a must read.
Linda also shared with me information about the newsletter
that ran this article, which is called "Windows Secrets".
Apparently, this newsletter has both a free version and a
paid subscription, of which Linda is a subscriber. She
went on to say that this is one of the better online
newsletters out there as far as "digging
into current industry practices, and rooting out software
problems and revealing the workarounds to them."
The free version can be seen on
https://windowssecrets.com/ . It just might be
what some of us are looking for when dealing with Microsoft
Windows. As of the printing of this newsletter,
I have received an additional email regarding the Windows
problem, so it truly might be to your advantage to search
this site and read the articles involved. |
