Photographic History of Louisville:
How to Preserve Your Photos
Bill Carner, of the University of Louisville
Photographic Archives Department, will be our presenter during the October
2nd meeting. Bill will cover the scanning procedures
used in the archives, along with information on digital
photography, and on photo preservation. Bill will also include a few words on the book he worked on,
Louisville Then and Now.
Bill has worked for the University of Louisville Photographic
Archives since 1978 when there were no computers in his department. As Bill
wrote in his bio, "Within a year or two we had a steam-powered
Flintstone model dumb terminal behind a lead shield in our
workroom that
was used to create databases." He went on to say he
finally received his first PC in the late 1980's with a whopping
128mb of storage. Although Bill says he did not
expect to deal with digital photography, as it was "...still the
stuff of science fiction movies." He was bitten by the
bug, and now thanks to a savvy work-study student who got him up
to speed on Photoshop and digital imaging, Bill is scanning and
"Photoshopping" like a kid.

Article 1 - Vista
and the Reliability & Performance Monitor |
By Vinny LaBash, a member and regular columnist
of the Sarasota Personal Computer Users Group, Inc., Florida
http://www.spcug.com/ vlabash(at)comcast.net. Obtained from APCUG with the author's
permission for publication by APCUG member groups.
Anyone who has spent time trying to
understand the Windows XP Performance Monitor is going to love
Vista’s Reliability & Performance Monitor. No more will you have to
figure out what the various performance procedures are really
measuring. All the confusion has been eliminated and a well designed
screen utility makes everything vastly simplified. Every time you
run a program on your system, performance is affected in some way.
The new Vista Performance Monitor allows you to track these
operations on a real-time basis or to collect data for analysis at a
later time. The utility does this by taking configuration
information, performance counters, data specific to program events,
and then merging everything into Data Collection sets. Microsoft has
prefigured all the important details into a completely revised
utility that is not only easy to use, but easy to understand. This
new utility provides you with a set of preconfigured elements that
you can use to monitor the reliability of your system. This article
will give you a detailed overview of the Reliability Monitor, and
show how to use its System Stability Chart to track how your system
behaves.....

Help! My Vinyl is Melting...REALLY! |
By Lou Torraca, President MOAA Computer User Group, HI
www.the-tug.org; Af06hi(at)gmail.com
To paraphrase a recent TV
commercial, we all do dumb things, but doing them with your computer
doesn't have to be one of them.
If
you have the same problem as I do, read on, a solution is available.
I have hundreds, yup, hundreds of vinyl records, 78s, 33s, and even
a few 45s stashed in my garage which is a pretty hot spot (no, not a
WI-FI hotspot) a really hot spot. I’ve thought about converting them
to cassettes (yes, I know, that was a long time ago), then to CDs
and now to DVDs. I just attended a techie conference and one of the
many presentations was on this very subject, so I paid lots of
attention and took notes. The presenter also talked about how to
convert other media, e.g. VHS tapes, but I’ll save that for another
column......
