August 7, General Meeting Review |
General Meeting Notes: "Winds are a-changin' at KIPCUG"
Vice President John Henderson presented (2) two new changes in KIPCUG's future as
well as the reasons behind them:
- KIPCUG has been told by their bank that the current processing
of credit cards will no longer be supported. To this extent,
as of our September meeting we will no longer be accepting credit
card payments via a manual credit card receipt process, but will accept credit card payments through our Paypal
account. A computer will be set up at the back table to accept
credit payments. We appreciate your indulgence as we bring our
membership processing up to par with current technology.
- You may have noticed the absence of our magazine since the May
2007 issue. One reason is that KIPCUG has decided to move
ahead with technology and enter the digital information age.
We are not alone, most of the computer users' groups are dropping
their printed versions and replacing them with digital versions.
The Lexington group dropped their printed magazine as of this month
(August). The other contributing factor is the rising cost of printing,
which has become a very large portion of our monthly expenses.
[This current newsletter is the 4th attempt and is an evolving work
in progress. Helpful hints as to how we can improve the
content and layout are more than welcome.]
This newsletter will be sent to all who "opt-in" to receive it [an
explanation of this, as well as problems with not receiving it, are
mentioned further along in this article.] The newsletter will
include "links" to articles, additional information at our
KIPCUG.org website, along with links to other helpful sites.
We invite you to visit our new Article page, where you will
find an index of articles (although limited at this time) which will be archived
on our site. It is a dynamic page, one that will be constantly
evolving.
In addition, the Board of Directors believe
that there should still be something coming to our members in their
mail. Therefore, a monthly postcard will be sent to our
members, notifying them of the upcoming meeting and any current
issues. If you have not been receiving a postcard the past 2
months, please notify one of the board members. We ask
for the indulgence of the members as we continue to implement these
changes.
Now, as to the reasons and remedies for receiving the newsletter, it
can be narrowed down to these two :
- You did not say "yes" to the preliminary emails sent to you,
asking you to reply in order to continue receiving emails from KIPCUG,
simply put "opting-in". KIPCUG, in order to avoid
becoming a spam problem to members, has decided to incorporate
the dual opt-in process. This is where a member signs up,
receives a confirmation email and, in that email, a request to
reply to that email in order to actively receive the newsletter.
The remedy to this problem can be found on
www.kipcug.org.
There is a box on the right side of the screen where you can
enter your name and email address. After sending, you will
receive a confirmation with a request to reply. Just
follow the instructions, and you should begin receiving the next
newsletter, unless, of course, problem #2 becomes an issue for you.
- The other possible problem is that the newsletter is still
getting caught in your Spam filter. To remedy this
problem, you must go into your Accept list and add (2) domain
names: kipcug.org and bizmailtoday.com. The second
domain name is for the service that we are using to generate the
mailings. Hopefully, your email program should then allow
receipt of the newsletter. Please let John Henderson,
Brian Miller, or Sue Foulks know if you continue to experience
difficulties.
Understandably, if you are reading this from your email, the
above information has been unnecessary. However, the current copy of
the newsletter is added as a link to our home page, which may be the only way
some of our members can get the newsletter until their dilemmas are
resolved.
Presentation: Sun Microsystem's Servers
At the August meeting, our presenters were from CTBS, a
division of Cincinnati Bell Telephone, who in May 2006 purchased
ATI and have come to Louisville to provide IT solutions to
business customers of all sizes. As affiliates of Sun
Microsystems, their presentation included a PowerPoint slideshow
of Sun Microsystems' x64 and Xeon-based servers, their various
configurations and applicability from small businesses to large
corporations.

SyncToy
is one of the Microsoft Power Toys,
free utilities programmed by MS programmers…
The best things in life are free,
and Microsoft’s SyncToy is one of them. It is a simple and effective little utility to let you synchronize
folders in different locations. For several generations of MS
Windows the “official” Microsoft way to synchronize folders has been
to use a virtual Briefcase. I never figured out how to use the
involved and cumbersome process. As easy as it is to synchronize and
update a Web site on the computer with the online version, using an
FTP program such as CuteFTP, it should be just as easy to
synchronize my photo folders with their backups on an external hard
drive. SyncToy will do the job quickly and easily, using an
intuitive interface. It is also handy to synchronize genealogy data
with backups, as well as letter folders and other documents....more
