What's so bad about Spam?
- Irritating for end users, but a higher cost for ISP's, system
administrators, and the wider Internet
- Makes disproportionate use of resources shared across a network
or system (bandwidth, disk space)
- Abuses services provided for customers on the assumption of
reasonable use
- Spam is often fraudulent- either in the sense of making fraudulent
offers, or in the sense of attempting to deceive the recipient about
its origin- often by skirting or ignoring accepted Internet standards
and protocols
- Spam coming from a single customer of an ISP can result in
"blacklisting" of a large number of individuals- blocking their email,
or in some cases all traffic originating in their IP range (the
"Internet Death Penalty")
