Bill has worked at the University of Louisville Photographic Archives since 1978 when they were still in the Reynolds Building and didn't have a computer.

Within a year or two they had a steam powered Flintstone model dumb terminal behind a lead shield in their workroom that was used to create databases, but Bill didn't get a PC on his desk until late in the 1980's or early in the 1990's when they had been in the Ekstrom Library for years. It had a black and orange monitor and came with Wordstar and an astonishing 128 mb of storage. Today he'd throw away camera memory card with 128 mb of storage. The internet may have been around but no web. Digital photography was still the stuff of science fiction movies, Bill expected to retire before he'd have to deal with that.

But he was wrong, the old speed curve caught up with him and now he is scanning and Photoshopping like a kid. He was lucky enough to have a savvy work study student bring him up to speed on Photoshop and digital imaging, so now he can pass for an expert if you don't listen too close.

Bill is going to talk about the scanning procedures at the Photo Archives and how KIPCUG members might put them to use. He will touch on digital photography as well, how pixels are free but the pixel catching devices are not. He will also share a few words about the book he worked on, Louisville Then and Now, and photo preservation in general.

KIPCUG Meeting Features:

Back-to-Basics:

The KIPCUG General Meeting starts with the ever-helpful Back-to-Basics session.

Each month "Back-to-Basics" chooses a subject to improve everyone's basic/general knowledge. The sessions are intended to help the entry level user. Tom Scanlan leads our Back-to-Basics presentations.  Contact Wayne Perkey, our Program Director, with your suggestions for future topics.

User-to-User with Bob Rose

Bring your problems on a 3x5 card and we will try to give you a fix!

The User to User session with host Bob Rose is just before the Main Presentation, giving your KIPCUG friends a chance to answer YOUR questions submitted on paper. If YOU are having a problem with your PC, this is the time to get a good solution, so remember to bring your questions.  Follow up questions and discussions are posting on the KIPCUG Forum under "Users Helping Users."
