November 1, 2005 Program Notes:

What is a virus? A worm? Am I really safe on the internet? How do I stop all this spam, and where does it come from? These are questions IT departments, and pc techs in general hear everyday. Have you ever wondered "Just how safe am I?" What do I really need? If you want to know what a firewall is, how to use it, and where to get one, this is the meeting for you.

The fastest growing area of online technology today is in the realm of security. In Novembers meeting, our own Tom Scanlon and Wayne N. Perkey II are going to answer these, and many other questions. In addition to his weekly tech radio show, Mr. Perkey gives regular seminars on pc and internet security. Mr. Scanlon, our regular 'Back to Basics' presenter, is of course, in expert in all things related to the PC. These two gentlemen will be covering online and PC security, focusing on what types of software/hardware you should have, and where to get it.

Mr. Perkey will also include his list of the top ten security related programs everyone should have that are free, or nearly free.

John Henderson will step in for Tom during our Back-to-Basics section as he will be part of the main presentation.  John will cover a similar topic:  How to tell if that e-mail from ebay or PayPal is real or just another instance of spam.

KIPCUG meetings are not just for members. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. This is a great topic to bring a friend to see. Security is an issue every person with online access needs to know. If you are new to computers or thinking of getting one, come on in. This meeting is made for you. Tom and Wayne will have a lot of important information for you, and are pro's at making common sense out of high technology. Members, this is a great opportunity to introduce someone to KIPCUG.

KIPCUG Meeting Features:

Back-to-Basics:

The KIPCUG General Meeting starts with the ever-helpful Back-to-Basics session.

Each month "Back-to-Basics" chooses a subject to improve everyone's basic/general knowledge. The sessions are intended to help the entry level user. Tom Scanlan leads our Back-to-Basics presentations.  Contact Tom with your suggestions for future topics.

User-to-User with Bob Rose

Bring your problems on a 3x5 card and we will try to give you a fix!

The User to User session with host Bob Rose is just before the Main Presentation, giving your KIPCUG friends a chance to answer YOUR questions submitted on paper. If YOU are having a problem with your PC, this is the time to get a good solution, so remember to bring your questions.

Door Prizes

KIPCUG members qualify for great door prizes.

PIG SIG

PIG means Food; SIG means Special Interest Group.

Meet us at Friday's following the General Meeting!  We always invite the Presenter to socialize and have a late snack or meal.  Everyone is welcome.  Ask a few more questions.  Chat with other KIPCUG members.  We grab a few tables, have fun, network, and relax a little before returning home.  Grab a chair and join in! Friday's is located at 2311 Lime Kiln Road.  From the meeting take Brownsboro Road east to Lime Kiln, turn right, Friday's will be on your left.  Everyone pays for their own “snack.” See you there!
