Introduction
  • Antivirus software is essential in today’s dangerous Internet world.
  • Keeping antivirus software and definitions current are imperative (at least once per week!).
  • You will learn how to install and update the free version of the AVG antivirus program.
  • Similar techniques apply to other antivirus programs (Norton, Trend Micro, Panda, McAfee, etc.).

Getting AVG
  • Go to ‘www.84online.com’.
  • Look for ‘Free AVG Antivirus’.

Once you are on the GriSoft website
  • Read the instructions and conditions.
  • Click on ‘Download AVG Free Edition’.
  • Follow the instructions on the menus.

Installing AVG Antivirus
  • Make sure no other antivirus program is installed on your computer.
  • Locate the downloaded program file.
  • Execute the program by double-clicking it.

  • Restart your computer
  • You may see new screens during bootup.
  • The program will automatically run, and do initial tweaking and updates.

  • You may be asked to restart your computer, especially if an older install program is used.
  • If so, the newer version will re-start the tweaking and updates.
  • Skip the ‘Update Now’ selection if you rebooted.

  • Put in a new floppy diskette.
  • Click on ‘Format it’.

  • Only the first floppy needs to be bootable.
  • After formatting, continue with copying.
  • Keep track of which diskette is which.

  • Click the center tab, ‘Update manager’.

About the Update Manager
  • The Update Manager is where automatic updates are controlled
  • The default time is 14 days.  I recommend a smaller number (5 days or less).
  • Chose an appropriate time of day for the update to be attempted.

  • You must exit and restart the AVG program before the update is applied.
  • If you don’t, it will download the same update again if you update again.
  • Some updates require the computer to be re-started and/or rebooted.

Select an update source
  • Select ‘From Internet’.
  • This takes you to the ‘Update Manager’ in the AVG Control Center.

If no update is available
  • You are up-to-date.
